Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser is an important person in Jamie’s life throughout his time in Outlander. What happens to the character?

If it wasn’t for Murtagh, Jamie wouldn’t be the man he grew up to be. In fact, there are times that Jamie wouldn’t have even grown up. Murtagh got Jamie out of trouble more times than once.

The character’s storyline was different in the show compared to the books. Whether book fans liked it or not, this was mostly due to TV writing. Duncan Lacroix did such an amazing job that the writers couldn’t help but keep him around for a while.

Personally, I liked it. I felt including the character in the colonies worked, and I felt more connected to the Regulator cause. A lot happens in the course of 20 years, and yes, the character could have changed.

What happened to Murtagh in the books? What happened to him in the series? Is there a chance he can return for Season 6? Here’s everything you need to know.

When does Murtagh die in the Outlander books?

We find out during Voyager that Murtagh didn’t make it through the Battle of Culloden. Jamie doesn’t remember much, but he does remember that his godfather died.

It’s in later books that we get a few flashbacks. Jamie remembers that he was there when Murtagh died. Murtagh said his last words to Jamie (which were the words used in the TV series when Murtagh did eventually die there).

When does Murtagh die in the Outlander TV series?

During Outlander Season 3, we learn that Murtagh survived. Not all the details are shared, but somehow, Murtagh ended up being captured and was at Ardsmuir with Jamie. He’s then transported to the colonies with everyone else except Jamie.

When Jamie eventually gets to the colonies, Murtagh is there in North Carolina. There’s a wonderful reunion moment. Sure, Murtagh would have likely tried to write to Jamie at some point or at least to Jenny, but I can forgive that oversight considering the time period. How do we know he didn’t write and the letter got lost, or that he thought about it and then decided not to?

Murtagh ended up joining the Regulators. He became disenfranchised just like so many others at the time, which isn’t too hard to believe considering the life he likely had as an indentured servant for some time. He ended up dying at the Battle of Alamance when one of Jamie’s men shot him believing him to be a threat to Jamie.

The only way he’ll be in Outlander Season 6 is through a flashback. We’ll have to wait and see. He could show up in the prequel series.
