It is certainly no surprise that STARZ is reportedly looking at an Outlander spin-off. This is one of the biggest shows on the premium cable network. It only makes sense to want to expand the universe for the fans.
We’ve been asking for a Lord John Grey spin-off for some time. is this what the Outlander prequel spin-off will be about? Here’s a look at the plans we know so far.
Details about the Outlander prequel are slim
When Variety announced that there is a spin-off in the works, there weren’t many details to share. We know that Matthew B. Roberts will write and executive producer. We also know that Ronald D. Moore and Maril Davis are also attacked as executive producers. This makes sense as they are all involved in the main series.
As for what the story is about, there are no details. We don’t even know which characters the Outlander prequel series will be about.
It is possible to make it about Lord John Grey. The only problem here is that it would be set during the time of Outlander. It won’t really be a prequel. But there are a lot of novellas about the character to work from.
If it’s a true prequel, then we’re looking at storylines from before the series began. The most obvious would be Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser. However, Diana Gabaldon is still writing that prequel story. Does the show really want to risk a Game of Thrones mistake?
We could see something about Master Raymond, but again, Gabaldon is thinking about a prequel novel about him. The best option would be a prequel about Claire’s parents or Roger’s parents, set during the Second World War or just before. Maybe even a young Claire and Uncle Lamb.
