Outlander Book Club: A Breath of Snow and Ashes Chapter 36 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
This chapter foreshadows a little for Young Ian. There is clearly more to the story about his child. We don’t get all the details here, and we also don’t get to know too much about this son Eats Turtles believes Young Ian will have. We have to jump to Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone for some of this when it comes to Young Ian and Emily.
As for Fergus, there is still more to this story. While Fergus will eventually come back, he needs to spiral deeper before he can claw his way out. Depression is a scary thing, especially during a time period when men aren’t allowed to have any sort of feeling like this.
Adapting A Breath of Snow and Ashes chapter
While the chapter hasn’t been used yet, I fully expect it to happen in Outlander Season 6. I expect Young Ian to tell his story in Episode 4.
Will he only tell Marsali? I’m not sure if it’s going to be a slow reveal or if he chooses to open up to everyone. In terms of TV storytelling, it would be quicker to tell everyone at once and get everything done within an episode. The books have the luxury of a slower burn for this storyline.
There’s more to just the birth of the baby, after all. Young Ian needs to find out more from Claire about what could have caused problems and why he was encouraged to leave Emily. It would make more sense to keep it all contained to one episode.
