Why was Gallowglass so sad on A Discovery of Witches Season 3, Episode 4?

A Discovery of Witches Season 3, Episode 4 ended with a happy occasion. Yet, Gallowglass left on his own very sad. Why was that?

There is one show we’re currently watching to help us get through this last bit of Droughtlander. It’s all about A Discovery of Witches Season 3. We’re certainly interested in watching Gallowglass, played by Outlander‘s Steven Cree.

At the end of the episode, Diana gave birth to her and Matthew’s twins. The babies were healthy and Diana made it through well. It should have been a happy occasion. It was a happy occasion for most of the characters, but it was a bittersweet one for one of our favorites.

Gallowglass left at the end of the episode. It was clear throughout the episode that he wanted to be happy but found it hard to be, and some others noticed that.

Gallowglass is in love with Diana in A Discovery of Witches

It turns out that Gallowglass looks at Diana as more than just his aunt. This is a woman he has watched over throughout her whole life. He made that clear in the previous episode when Sarah asked how he knew Diana would lose herself in books.

Throughout that time, Gallowglass formed a bond with Diana without her ever knowing about him. When vampires bond, that’s it. There is no one else for them. They will do everything they can to be with that person, but Gallowglass was always loyal to Matthew. He didn’t go after Diana himself, even though he could have done. He waited to make sure that Diana and Matthew found each other.

The ending to this episode was difficult for him. He knows that Matthew will never leave Diana’s side. There is no breaking up that couple, and it means Gallowglass can never have the woman he loves. And he just has to be okay with that. It’s going to take some time to get there, though. Understandably, he is happy for Diana and Matthew, but he is also sad for himself and he is dealing with that.
