Does Matthew die in A Discovery of Witches?

As we get closer to the end of A Discovery of Witches, there is one big fear. It’s that Diana and Matthew won’t get their happily ever after. Is Matthew going to die before the end of the series?

Caution: We do have spoilers from the three All Souls trilogy books.

When there is a story involving heroes and villains, there are usually big deaths that happen. Sometimes, those deaths are the main characters. It’s no wonder that fans worry that someone important from A Discovery of Witches will die.

That someone important right now is Matthew. There are fears that he and Diana won’t get their family together because Ben or others will win.

Will Matthew die in A Discovery of Witches?

We don’t have the A Discovery of Witches series finale just yet. While it has aired in the UK on BBC iPlayer, it has not made it over in the States just yet. We have to wait until February to get the answers.

So, we’re using the books to help get an idea as to what could happen in the series. There is some good news based on the last book in the series, Book of Life.

Matthew doesn’t die in the book, but there is a moment where everything thinks he may have been killed. Matthew is taken and held hostage. Diana and others head to Chelm, Poland, where they find him in a former hospital. He’s shackled and dying, begging everyone to kill him.

However, it’s not Matthew. Diana realizes that Satu is enchanting them, wanting them all to believe that Matthew is dead.

After a showdown with Satu and then Benjamin, Diana is able to get to a very weakened Matthew and rescue him. She and others get him to safety at the Sept Tours, and the two have a chance to get their happy ending.

This is the way we think the series will go, too. After all, it doesn’t make sense to kill Matthew off when the books don’t. There would be a lot of angry book fans if that happened.
