Why don’t Jamie and Tom get along in Outlander?

Jamie Fraser and Tom Christie will not get along in Outlander Season 6. There’s immediate tension, but why is that going to happen?

There is going to be a lot of tension in Outlander Season 6. We know a big part of that is the Revolutionary War. The date for that starting is getting much closer, and Jamie will need to be strategic in his decision to switch sides.

Another bout of tension comes from a new family on Fraser’s Ridge. Tom Christie and his children will turn up, and it’s already clear from a sneak peek that Jamie and Tom don’t get along.

We didn’t need that clip, though. It’s been clear since we found out the Christies would be part of the story that there would be tension. What is the reasoning behind that tension?

It’s mostly about religion in Outlander Season 6

The problems are going to stem from religious views. Jamie is a Catholic. We all know that, but while he is a Catholic, he is respectful of other people’s views. He doesn’t have all that much tension with Roger despite him being a Presbyterian. Part of that is because Roger isn’t disrespectful, either.

Tom isn’t Roger. Tom Christie doesn’t like Catholics, much like many of the Protestants at the time. We have to think about the persecution both of these faiths within Christianity faced at various points up to this point. Let’s not get into Henry VIII, Bloody Mary, and even the Gunpowder Plot just a 150–200 years earlier. That’s not that long in terms of UK history!

So, we’re looking at religious tensions on the Ridge. Jamie is the laird of Fraser’s Ridge, even if he doesn’t technically use that title. If Tom wants to live there, he’ll need to follow Jamie’s law, and that means following a Catholic. It’s not going to be all that easy.
