Does Gallowglass die in A Discovery of Witches?

We’re only two episodes into A Discovery of Witches Season 3, but it is based on a book. Does Gallowglass die in the book? Will he die in the series?

Steve Cree is stealing our hearts as Gallowglass. If you’ve read the novel A Book of Life by Deborah Harkness, you’ll know how it all ends for this character. We haven’t seen how it plays out just yet in the series (not in the U.S., anyway!) but there is a strong chance that the storyline is going to play out in the same way.

So, we’re going to use the book as an idea as to whether Gallowglass will die. We’ll update this post after the finale to say whether Gallowglass did die on A Discovery of Witches Season 3 or not.

Does Gallowglass die in A Book of Life?

A Discovery of Witches Season 3 is based on the third book in the All Souls Trilogy, A Book of Life. This book picks up in the present day after Matthew and Diana return from the past. One of the first familiar faces they come across again is Gallowglass, who has waited centuries to see his uncle and aunt.

In the third book, we learn that Gallowglass was given the job of protecting Diana from a very young age. She had to meet Matthew, and Gallowglass made sure that was possible. It comes with a cost, though.

Gallowglass falls in love with Diana. Vampires are predatory, and they will kill those who fall for their mates. Matthew isn’t best pleased when he learns that his nephew has fallen in love with his wife. This is despite the fact that Gallowglass has ignored his own instincts to make sure that Diana is there for Matthew when the time comes.

Diana only puts it all together when she realizes that he has watched her. The tattoos he has are telling her story, and it’s clear just how much Diana means to Gallowglass. Diana doesn’t share the same feelings for him, and when Matthew learns the truth, Gallowglass is forced back into a life of solitary. It’s a sad ending for a character that was arguably a better vampire.

Does Gallowglass die in A Discovery of Witches?

I’m interested in how the show will handle the storyline. Will we get this storyline that sees Gallowglass end up in a life of solitary? Will the TV show change it a little and have Gallowglass sacrifice his life for Diana and the twins?

Will the series skip over Gallowglass’s feelings for Diana completely? We could see him just form a friendship, being a protector rather than someone who falls in love with Diana. We’ll be sure to check back in as soon as the A Discovery of Witches Season 3 finale airs.
