Will the portals in Outlander open today? (Winter Solstice)
Tuesday, Dec. 21 marks the Winter Solstice in 2021. It’s one of the big days of the year for many, but will the Outlander portals open?
We know that there are certain rules to time travel in the world of Outlander. In both the books and show, the time travel gene is required, but there’s one other requirement. Time travel only happens on certain days of the year.
It’s all about the pagan holidays. In the books, we saw Claire accidentally time travel for the first time on Beltane. In the show, she accidentally time traveled on Samhain (Halloween). Others have traveled on different days, including the Summer Solstice.
What about the Winter Solstice? Is it possible to travel on this day of the year?
Watch out for stone circles, Outlander fans!
Oh yes, you can get your bottom dollar that the portals are open in the world of Outlander today. The Winter Solstice is one of those big days. If you hear any buzzing near stone circles, you’ll want to watch out. Remember that time traveling is not guaranteed, and gemstones are needed to direct yourself through those stones.
All other rules for time travel will apply, of course. If you can’t hear the buzzing, maybe you’re like Jamie and just don’t have the gene.
When is the next festival in the world of Outlander?
What about Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve? Will these two days be times that people can travel through the stones?
There are only eight times of the year that the stones will open. Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve are neither of those days. The Winter Solstice is the closest to the two of them.
The next one coming up is Imbolic on Feb. 1.
Didn’t Claire travel through at Christmas? In Outlander Season 3, she did travel around Christmas, but it’s not 100% clear whether the writers made a boo-boo when it came to the date or whether it was just before the big day. Claire could have traveled on Winter Solstice, which is close enough to Christmas, anyway.
