Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone continues to build the families on the Ridge. It also brings us heartbreak in ways we haven’t experienced it before. What happened to Amy Higgins in the ninth Outlander book?

Caution: There are spoilers in this post from Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

One thing that Diana Gabaldon does in her books is remain true to history. That means there are a lot of heartbreaking moments. Death is a part of life, and for many, it is just accepted. No, that doesn’t mean people don’t mourn their losses, but they accept that death is just something that happens.

A moment happens during the ninth book in the series. It’s one that I had to read twice because it happened so suddenly just like things sometimes do.

How does Amy Higgins die in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone?

When Brianna and Roger return with their children, Bree and Amy form a bond. They are out berry picking one day with their children when a bear attacks.

Brianna and the children can just watch as Amy is mauled by the bear. There is nothing that Brianna can do except manage to get Amy back to the Ridge while still alive. Claire can’t treat Amy, but it does give Amy a chance to say goodbye to her sons and her husband Bobby Higgins.

The death is certainly a shock. It just happens so fast, and it’s certainly not something that we can predict. It’s also heartbreaking when you consider just how much Amy meant to Fraser’s Ridge as a whole.
