The Fiery Cross brings up the story of Otter Tooth, and we learn more about him. He was a member of the Montauk Five in Outlander.
Brianna is the one who figures out who Otter Tooth was in her own time. She recognizes the name Robert Springer as that of one of five men who were arrested for their activism. They were too extreme for the other Native American activists at the time and broke off from the group, becoming known as the Montauk Five.
The five would make it in the news after their release from jail on bail. They all went missing, with one of the five turning up dead through unknown causes weeks later. The others were never seen again.
Who were the Montauk Five on Outlander?
We’ve only heard about the Montauk Five in the Outlander books. However, the show has introduced two of the men so far. Otter Tooth was one, the ghost Claire saw that night in the storm. Wendigo Donner was the other, one of Lionel Brown’s men who now just wants to get back to his own time.
The five activists disappear on Nov. 1, 1968. They went to Ocracoke to travel through the stone circle after a man named Raymond explained how to time travel. They want to prevent the genocide of Native Americans, but the five don’t appear in the same time period.
Robert Springer says that he didn’t go back far enough. He wanted to get back to around 1650, but he finds out that he’s at least 50 years too late because of the use of iron kettles. Wendigo Donner arrives around 1766. We find out from Brianna that one was found in the 20th century dead. Not everyone makes it through the stones.
I can’t remember if we do actually find out about the other two members of the Montauk Five in the Outlander books. It’s possible that they ended up in different time periods or even trapped in the stones. Or maybe their bodies are found later in the 20th century.
