Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

The foreshadowing in this chapter is more like plot development. We always knew we’d end up at Wylie’s Landing at some point. Even without Jamie mentioning it to Roger when he thought he was dying of the snake bite, it was clear that Wylie had something to do with Bonnet.

It’s Roanoke that is more of the foreshadowing instead of straight plot development in this chapter. Bonnet is doing well for himself, and the Navy turns a blind eye from the smuggling. There’s more than alcohol being smuggled here. Keep an eye out in A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter wasn’t used in the series. Outlander Season 5 opted to bring the story of Bonnet and his smuggling forward. This will have been linked to the chances of losing access to Ed Speleers if things were left to Outlander Season 6. There is always the chance a guest star will get another show and not be available for filming later. Just look at how Laura Donnelly wasn’t available in Outlander Season 4.

So, I don’t mind that the show pulled Bonnet’s storyline forward. In fact, I preferred keeping it Bonnet’s story contained to just the fourth and fifth seasons. That means the sixth season can be contained to another villain, which we know is going to be the Christie family. This sort of storytelling works better for TV shows, and it would work best for the show-first or show-only fans.

The chapter did feel more like a filler chapter if I’m honest. That’s the case with a few chapters in The Fiery Cross. These filler chapters are great for growing the world and getting to see day-to-day life, but they don’t translate well on TV.

We did still get the bit about the whale, though. Instead of it being a dead whale, we saw Brianna and Claire talk about live whales. I loved this inclusion. It was a connection to the book, but also a connection to things that we’d all marvel at if we ended up in the past. Well, I would, at least!
