Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Jamie, Claire, Brianna, Roger, and Marsali heading to Wilmington. Fergus is on his way to New Bern with the surveys and he’ll meet the family in Wilmington on the way back. The family wants to talk to Milford Lyon, who is supposed to be bringing word of Bonnet. Lyon hasn’t got in touch, so the family decides to hunt down word about him (and Bonnet) instead.

When they get to Wilmington, there’s a discussion about the lack of windows. There were taxes on windows in the past. Even if you go to Scotland, you’ll see a lot of windows are covered in brick. The more windows a building had, the more tax needed to be paid.

Of course, the Colonies eventually kicked off about various taxes on tea and stamps, but never on windows. It does seem a little odd, but there you have it.

While in town, Roger runs into Mr. Duff. This is a man who Roger sailed with on the Gloriana, and a man who saw Brianna in Wilmington last. A lot has changed since then, and there are a couple of comments about Brianna no longer being in trousers.

Roger uses this chance to find out a little about Bonnet. Is he around? It turns out that he’s not, neither is the ship that Bonnet is supposed to be sailing. He could be at another port.

Duff thought everyone was around to see the dead whale that had arrived onshore. Of course, the family does end up heading to see the whale, but they also want to know as much as they can about Bonnet’s whereabouts.

Duff says the last time he saw Bonnet was on Roanoke eating fish pies. This is something to keep in mind for the next book. They came into North Carolina via Wylie’s Landing, which connects to earlier chapters. We know that Bonnet was at Jocasta’s house, and we’re sure that it was Wylie with him or Wylie is somehow connected to him.
