Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Brianna waking Roger up. There’s a man at the Big House, but she doesn’t want to wake Jamie or Claire. The two need their sleep after everything that happened with Jamie. It does seem like Jamie is recovering fully, though.

Roger is the one to see what Tom Christie wants. He’s there with his son and daughter, Allan and Malva, and shares that he’s looking for a place to live. People have recommended Fraser’s Ridge, and as he was at Ardsmuir, Roger is inclined to hear him out.

Tom explains that he had been indentured in South Carolina. When the person who bought his contract found out he was a teacher, Tom ended up teaching the local children. This is something Roger comments on as it means Brianna will be able to take a step back from teaching the children on the Ridge.

Tom even agrees to this. After all, he remained a school teacher after his indenture and was paid for it. However, when his former owner died and the heir inherited the land, the heir decided there was no need for a teacher anymore. So, Tom has had to find work elsewhere and it’s brought him to North Carolina.

Roger is a little hesitant, but only because he doesn’t know Tom. He knows that Jamie has opened the door to people from Ardsmuir to find a place. Roger is also curious about Tom offering the freemason “hello” to Roger, which Roger was able to respond with but not because Jamie has taught him. Roger doesn’t know about Jamie’s freemason connection just yet.

In the end, Roger agrees to sign out 50 acres of land, which is the basics for all. He’ll need somewhere to stay until a house is built, though. That’s something he gets Lizzie to do, taking the Christies to another family on the Ridge.

Roger can then head up to see Jamie and Claire. When Roger says it’s Tom Christie, Jamie has an odd look about him. It’s clear there is something about this man.
