Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Claire still worried about Jamie. He knows that she’ll sleep on the floor of the surgery, so she gets Roger and Arch Bug to get him up to their bed. Claire can’t argue with this, although she does try.

After asking her to touch him without causing pain, Claire certainly does and they have an intimate moment. However, it’s that night that Claire realizes that Jamie has planned how he will die. He has the windows open to be able to hear the tenants. He can hear his family around him, and he’s in his own bed with Claire. This is how he wants to pass onto the next life.

Yet Jamie then decides that he doesn’t want to die. Just as he is ready to take his last breath, he fights against it. He realizes that he doesn’t want to leave everyone behind, and he decides it’s time to fight fully for his life.

This is when he decides that Claire can amputate if she needs to. She can do whatever is necessary to save his life.

Claire doesn’t really want to cripple him, though. She wishes that she’d made more penicillin and that she went to somewhere to see a glassblower to create some sort of syringe. Kezzie tries to help by bringing her a rattle snake saying that Jamie needs to drink the blood of it.

The snake is fortunate. Brianna explains that the fangs of snakes are like syringes. They’re hollow to get the venom out. She can make a syringe from this, and now that she knows what Claire needs, she gets right to work.

On top of that, the Bugs have come to Claire’s rescue. They went around all the houses on the Ridge to collect moldy bread, biscuits, and other items. Claire can now make some more penicillin. It’s all coming into place.

The Beardsley twins find a good-sized snake and Brianna is able to make the syringe. Claire is able to inject the penicillin into Jamie’s leg. There is a lot of hope now that he can be saved fully.

What I love about this chapter is how everyone comes together. The Bugs didn’t even need to be asked. They just focused on what Claire needed and went to work. Once Brianna knew what was needed, she got right to work and used her MIT education to help her. The Beardsley twins even helped with their snake idea. If it wasn’t for the snake in the first place, Brianna would never have thought about the options to make a syringe.
