Just the Outlander chapter

The chapter starts with Brianna giving orders to butcher the buffalo. At first, the men of the Ridge want nothing to do with it. After all, they didn’t kill the creature. However, Roger and Fergus both step forward to make it clear Brianna’s orders need to be followed.

The men eventually do. All the meat is stripped and every little bit of the buffalo is used for something. I love this chapter in seeing how each part of the buffalo is salvaged. There’s not a bit left behind, which isn’t the case anymore. We don’t tend to use the bones for buttons, for example! However, I will say that I’ve used bones of animals for soups and broths plenty of times.

Claire is proud of her daughter. Brianna makes it clear that as Jamie’s daughter, she is a force to be reckoned with.

After that, the focus is on Jamie’s leg. It’s starting to look like a leg again, and that offers Claire a little bit of hope. Claire also notices that Roger is great for offering support for Jamie. She wishes she could know what happened between the two while they were surviving the night after the snake bite, but it’s clear that they’ve come to a new understanding and respect.

The end of the chapter offers a little more hope. Brianna has found maggots, and they’re the right type of maggots—the ones that will eat the dead flesh. Claire doesn’t know if they’ll help with everything because they won’t get to the blood infection, but they can eat some of the dead and infected tissue in the leg. It’s a start.
