Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 91 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There is a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. The main part is Jamie’s leg being amputated. It won’t need to happen, but it’s a conversation that is going to come up again. There’s no way that Claire is going to let yer husband die. Others won’t let him die, either.
This is more about plot development, though. Jamie not wanting to lose his leg is a big part of the story in the next few chapters.
Real foreshadowing is in comments about Fergus. Jamie could tell that Fergus was worried about something more than catching game, and Jamie assumes it’s just another baby. There is something more to come for Fergus, though. The fourth baby has a disability, which is naturally going to cause some problems. Fergus only has one hand and can’t provide for his family in the way that men are expected to.
All this is going to lead to Fergus having a complete mental health crisis. He goes through an extremely dark path and everyone needs to work together to help pull him through it. They also all work together to find something for Fergus to do so that he can feel like he’s providing for his family.
It’s not often that we get a lot about Marsali and Fergus. When we do, it’s important to pay attention to their conversations or mentions of the characters because they offer a bit of foreshadowing.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
The chapter was used for the series. First, we had Jamie being brought back to the Ridge and the conversation about Claire amputating his leg. He refuses to let it happen, but it’s clear that Claire is concerned that he’ll die if she doesn’t amputate.
The moment with the buffalo was also used. This was a little different with Marsali not actually being there to help take out the buffalo with a blanket. Instead, Lizzie freezes and screams, moving in a way to protect Jemmy and alerting the other women to the problem.
Claire shoots and kills the buffalo while Brianna is hit after getting the buffalo away from her son. It still ends up being the women taking out this creature that the men had earlier been hunting. I love that we get to see how the women can come together. So many times we see women tearing each other down, and one thing Outlander (both book and show) does is have women holding each other up.
