Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is a bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s all linked to history and changing it. Whether history can or can’t be changed, this part of the timeline isn’t going to change for Jamie. He’s not going to die here, even if he thinks he will.

Of course, we know now about the house fire. Claire and Jamie were never there. Or were they? Was that part of history that was managed to be changed because Claire and Jamie knew about it? I don’t really know. Again, I try not to think about time travel too much.

When it comes to plot development, there’s foreshadowing of that through Jamie’s words about Bonnet. He’s setting up a plan to get Bonnet. Roger is now going to be part of that plan, and it will eventually happen.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter was partly adapted. The conversation about changing history wasn’t used, but it was included elsewhere. Brianna rides out to Alamance to tell everyone what she knows there. That’s where the conversation about changing history takes place, with Roger on the side that it can be changed. I don’t mind the change. It gave Brianna more of a reason to ride out to Alamance, and it included this not-so-important discussion for this moment in the show.

Another part that was adapted slightly was the conversation about Bonnet. In the series, everyone believes that Bonnet has died. During the wedding, Lord John Grey has the news that Bonnet is still alive and Brianna overhears. Roger has already found out the truth, so he’s not surprised when Jamie finally tells him. Roger also doesn’t hide the fact that he already knows.

The conversation moves on to Jamie asking Roger to kill Bonnet. Up to this point, Roger isn’t sure if he can kill a man. Alamance has changed him. Everything Bonnet did makes him hate the man. Roger agrees to killing Bonnet if it comes to it. I love how the series adapted this, showing us the development for Roger’s character.

I also love that the snake bite was included. We needed it. This is more than just drama. It gives Roger and Jamie another chance to bond with Roger starting the process of saving Jamie’s life. Claire continues the process, and then it’s Brianna who finishes it off when she’s able to create a syringe for the antibiotics. There’s simply no way all the development could happen without Jamie getting bitten by a snake.
