Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

I think the foreshadowing is in Jamie’s comments about how Roger will do. It’s clear that Roger has taken on everything Jamie has taught him, and Jamie is proud. These two have had their doubts about each other for a while, although Roger wanted Brianna’s father to like him as would most son-in-laws.

We’ve seen the relationship between the two men adapt throughout The Fiery Cross. Alamance was a big turning point, but Jamie also sees something else in Roger now. It’s clear that Jamie was waiting to see how his lessons paid off. He wants to see if Roger was paying attention, and he’s proud that Roger had.

That strained relationship is starting to come to an end, making way for peace.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter was partly used in the series. In Outlander Season 5, Episode 10, we got to see Roger test driving a sword, but it wasn’t with some unknown doctor. Instead, Roger test drove the sword with Jamie.

There are a couple of reasons I love that this happened. The first is that we didn’t get to see the sword training, so we needed to see Roger and Jamie have some fun with the swords in some way. This is a major moment to show how this bond between the two men has changed. They’ve gained an understanding of each other. In fact, they like each other at this point, which is a huge change after Outlander Season 4.

I also love that we didn’t just get some face that we’d never see again. The TV show would have needed to cast someone else to do the sword fighting, which would have taken the budget from somewhere else. By having it be between Jamie and Roger, costs could be kept to a minimum. I’m all for that when the money can be spent elsewhere.
