Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 87 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There isn’t that much foreshadowing in the chapter. The only bit that I get is when Brianna is talking about doing the laundry. There’s a sense that she’s thinking about how much easier laundry was in her own time period growing up. Even if the machines were nothing like we have today, it would still be easier than what she has to go through on a daily basis.
I think we get that element of foreshadowing of Roger and Brianna eventually heading to their own time. Up to now, there’s no reason for them to go back. Roger is getting used to life in the 18th century and finding something to do. However, there is going to be something that takes them to their own time where life is a little bit easier.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
The chapter wasn’t used in Outlander Season 5. However, we did get to see the sword fight between Jamie and Roger. This is an adaptation of this chapter and the next chapter.
Roger is looking to buy a sword while they’re in Cross Creek. In the books, Roger tries out the sword with someone else. The show decides to combine the sword training with the moment when Roger gets the sword.
We get this sense that the sword training has been happening off-screen. I don’t mind that. For a TV show, things need to be focused on the overall story or specific character growth. We don’t need to see the training when we get to see Roger testing out the sword with Jamie. It’s clear that the two have formed a bond at some point, and it’s also clear that the two have trained together as Roger has found a place in the 18th century.
The sword fighting can seem like it’s just fun and games, something lighthearted for an otherwise intense episode. However, it gives us that look at how Jamie and Roger’s bond has adapted since Alamance, and especially since Outlander Season 4!
