Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 86 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts with Brianna and Roger in the middle of the night. Jemmy has woken them up, and they both spend some time together. This is a chance for Brianna to share one of her dreams with Roger.
She started off with a dream of being in her house in Boston, but it turned into a nightmare. She was with Bonnet, and there was a monster coming after them. Brianna never saw what the monster was, and she notes that maybe she woke before the monster got to her so she didn’t die in her dreams.
After that, we move onto Roger spending time with Jamie in the woods. They’re spending some quality time together hunting, and that’s when Roger asks for lessons in sword fighting. He wants to know how to make sure he can win in a battle.
Jamie agrees to teach him, but Jamie wants to know why. Roger needs to find a way to fit into the 18th century. He also knows that there is a war coming. However, he’s not really thinking about the Revolutionary War to come. There are animals that could come after him. There are possibilities living on the Ridge. Roger simply wants to be ready.
I think things that Roger has witnessed up to this point has made him realize the skills he needs to learn. He can’t rely on his voice anymore, so he needs to develop his skills. He’s willing to do that. This is a moment that makes it 100% clear that he is remaining in the past for Brianna and Jemmy. If there were ever any doubts up to that, this is the point that changes all that.
