Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 84 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
The chapter doesn’t foreshadow too much toward the end, except reminding us of the fire that’s still to come. The foreshadowing is at the beginning. Clarence turns up and Jamie is concerned about Roger, but he doesn’t say anything.
There is still something about Roger. He’s on a journey of his own, and he does have a long walk ahead of him. The walk isn’t the one Jamie and Claire think he’ll be on. I love how we get this sense that they’re all in similar parts of the woods, but they don’t yet realize just how close they are.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
The chapter wasn’t used for the series. It didn’t have a huge effect on the overall story, so there wasn’t need for it. With the show having to keep things condensed, I didn’t mind skipping this.
The weather and the situation with the horses would have also been expensive and hard to control. When it comes to important chapters, the costs are understandable. When it comes to just adapting another chapter for the story without the overall connection, there’s just no way to justify the cost.
Plus, horses aren’t exactly the easiest to work with. You’ll notice that we don’t get the animals on the series all that much, and there are just mentions of the White Sow. This is because animals are too unpredictable. It’s best to keep things as simple as possible for filming.
