Claire and Jamie face a loss while in the woods during Outlander Book 5, Chapter 84

We jump back to Claire and Jamie, who are in the woods in the middle of the thunderstorm in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 84. By the end of the book, they face a loss.

The two are in the woods trying to wait out the storm. They can’t do that, though. There’s smoke closing in around them, and they end up coming across Clarence. The thunder and lightning are also getting much worse, so the two have to force the horses through the backcountry in the weather.

That’s when it all goes wrong. There’s an explosion, almost killing Claire and Jamie with where they were thrown. It does kill one of the horses and seriously injures another one. It’s a sad chapter when you consider what the horses would have meant to the characters.

This wasn’t a chapter used in the series, though. That’s not all too surprising considering it didn’t have a huge impact on the overall story. Plus, we didn’t really get to know all the animals by name on the series, so we didn’t really get that connection that Claire had to her horse in this chapter.

However, there is a bit of foreshadowing thanks to Clarence turning up. We’ll get to that in the foreshadowing section.

Let’s dive into The Fiery Cross Chapter 84.
