Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

The foreshadowing in this is that the truth is eventually going to come out. William believes his father was the Earl of Elsmere. Everyone but Claire believes that, although there’s a strange moment with Roger. I don’t remember Roger learning the truth, but has he figured it out for himself?

Either way, eventually, Brianna is going to learn who William is. William is also going to learn. We get just a hint of what that will mean and why William will take it so hard. Remember the time period and the family that he comes from. Remember the titles that he has because of who his perceived father is. Suddenly learning that he’s the son of Jamie, a pardoned Jacobite, is going to rock him for sure.

There’s also the reminder of a war coming. Jamie wanted the astrolabe because of the war that will arrive. He wants to make sure the land remains in his and the MacKenzies’ hands. That means he needs to have it surveyed and registered.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter wasn’t used in the series. It wasn’t really needed considering everything else that was going on. However, there was an eventual gift.

John Grey gave Brianna a small gift when she was supposed to be going back through the stones with Roger and Jemmy (although John thought she was leaving for Boston). The gift in Outlander Season 5 is important as it reminds us of the friendship between John and Brianna. Sometimes that can be forgotten in the books until you remember the time they spent together when Roger was the Mohawks’ prisoner.

In the series, we didn’t need the reminder of John and Jamie’s friendship. That had been so prominent up to this point, and we did get the conversation between them after everything with Bonnet went down. Focusing on Brianna and John in the series was more important.
