Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t that much foreshadowing in the chapter. This is all about plot development. Claire having to cut into Roger’s neck is going to have an effect later on. Remember all that foreshadowing with Roger using his voice. It’s about to come up.

The little bit of foreshadowing is how Jamie will blame himself for this. This situation is going to change the relationship between Roger and Jamie for good.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

The chapter was used in Outlander Season 5, Episode 8, but not in the exact way the book writes it. Instead, we got the silent film montage of Jamie cutting down Roger and Claire coming into help. It was a creative way of handling everything involving Roger in the aftermath of being hanged.

I know not everyone liked the silent film flashes. In a way, they were supposed to be annoying. PTSD is annoying. Trauma hits us in ways that we least expect and at some of the most inopportune times. Those who have been through traumatic events and suffer from PTSD will understand.

The use of silent films also connected to Roger’s life. Before it all, we had him in the 20th century heading out on a date with Brianna to a silent film. His brain connected silent film and trauma, which offered us a deeper connection to Roger’s mind.

I liked the way the show handled things. It helped to prevent things getting too traumatic for viewers, and it brought a part of the character to the screen in ways that wouldn’t usually be possible. Plus, it prevented things being too internalized, which is fine for books but doesn’t work for TV shows.
