Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 63 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
Claire notes that the camp is preparing for the battle to come. Everyone can sense that this is going to turn into some sort of battle, with feelings similar to that of Culloden.
When Brianna rides in, she makes it clear that she wasn’t just going to sit at home. She is going to help Claire when the wounded come in. After all, if it comes to a battle, then there will be wounded. There will be people who need help.
While Claire notes that her daughter isn’t a good nurse, Brianna does understand modern-day medical needs. Claire also notes that she will need an extra pair of hands when the battle does come to pass. She’s expecting it to, and she even has a box full of medical supplies that she can take to the battlefield with her to help any of the injured who can’t make it back to the medical tent.
However, Brianna has news for Claire. She shares that Governor Tryon and the Battle of Alamance aren’t in the history books. This is surprising considering that there were monuments and statues in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Surely there would have been something, even just small, in the history books.
It’s possible that the history in Boston never covered a lot of the North Carolina history. If U.S. history lessons are anything like the UK history lessons that I had, local history is considered important. The events that happened in other parts of the country don’t necessarily get taught. So, it’s possible that Boston schools focused on the Boston events leading up to the War of Independence but there wasn’t a focus on the Regulators. Claire has already noted that she never heard of the Regulators before.
Claire is sure that a battle is going to happen. She can just feel it. And when Tryon turns up at the end of the chapter, he makes it clear that the Regulators have one hour and one hour only.
