Modern Love: What happened in Tobias Menzies’s episode?

Tobias Menzies and Sophie Okonedo starred in one episode of Modern Love Season 2. What happened in it, and did it end with them finding love again?

The two played Van and Liz, two divorced parents trying to simply co-exist. However, it’s soon clear that there is more to their feelings for each other. There is still love there, and it looks like they’re going to give it another go.

Tragedy strikes on Modern Love, though. Liz finds out that she has breast cancer, and she doesn’t want to get into anything with Van again because of it. Van is understandably hurt, realizing that he is like a giddy teenager.

Is there a chance for Van and Liz on Modern Love?

When Liz has her initial operation, she opts for a friend to be her next of kin. She doesn’t want Van there, although her friend does share the schedule for radiation.

However, Van makes it clear that he’s going to be there for her. He’s stopped dating, and he wants to be there to support his ex-wife. He only has eyes for her. Now it’s just up to Liz. What will she choose to do?

When she finds out the cancer is back, she agrees to enrolling into a clinical trial. However, she wants to change her next of kin. It’s time to make Van her next of kin, which her friend understands.

The episode ends with Van and Liz at the hospital. Van gives Liz the gift that he was originally going to give the night Liz told him she had cancer. It was a ring Liz had liked at the market but didn’t fit, so Van bought it and got it resized for her. It wasn’t a proposal but a sign of how much he loved her.

And that’s where the episode of Modern Love ended. We got to see this different side to Menzies after seeing him play more villainous characters. There was a chance to see this hope of a second chance with the same person. It’s certainly worth the watch.
