Jocasta explains the story of the Frenchman’s gold in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 53

Claire, Jamie, Brianna, and Duncan learn about the Frenchman’s gold in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 53. Who was that masked man? That’s the big question for the time being.

The chapter starts with Jocasta talking about someone attacking her. While she may be blind, she certainly has her mental capacity to take in her surroundings through her other senses. It’s clear who attacked her just based on the man we saw in the previous chapter.

However, the talk of the attack moves onto the talk of something else. Jocasta has to share the story of the Frenchman’s gold, and it’s clear that this isn’t the last time we’ll hear about it. What it does offer is a mystery to solve, with the threat of people looking for the gold in the future.

There is a heartbreaking story within the gold story. We finally get to find out what happened to Jocasta’s children.

The chapter was partly used for the series. We didn’t get the full story explained, but we did get a bit of it. The show handled it slightly differently to work in Jocasta’s story and her torn heart. I’ll share why I adored the way the show did it, even though I do love the bigger storyline in the book. I do keep show and book completely separate.

Of course, there is certainly foreshadowing. It’s not quite plot development at this point, but there is more to come when it comes to the Frenchman’s gold.

Let’s dive into The Fiery Cross Chapter 53.
