Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 45 breakdown
Claire goes to see Betty to try to treat her in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 45
Claire is prevented from checking up on Betty in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 45. However, it’s clear there’s a bigger story within this.
With Betty being drugged, Claire naturally wants to check on her. Right now, it’s not even about foul play. Claire just wants to make sure Betty is alive and will recover. She’s prevented from doing that thanks to Ulysses calling in another doctor.
We get that reminder once more that the men of the time treat Claire with suspicion. Naturally, she is worried about the male doctors’ treatments because of the time. Most of them don’t even clean their equipment. However, the men treat Claire differently because she’s a woman.
It’s within this part of the story that we have the foreshadowing. People will always treat Claire with suspicion, and I’ll get to that in the foreshadowing section. There is a little hint of more to come with Betty’s storyline, but that’s not exactly foreshadowing. It’s plot development.
Another bit of foreshadowing is at the end. It’s all connected to Jamie’s thoughts of his honor being offended.
Just like a lot of previous chapters involving Betty, this wasn’t used on the series. Again, I don’t mind that it wasn’t, and I’ll get to that in the adaptation section. While it was a good murder mystery for the book, it wasn’t all that necessary for the TV show.
Let’s dive into The Fiery Cross Chapter 45.
