Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 44 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
I don’t see that much foreshadowing in this chapter. If I’m honest, I see this whole section drama for the sake of drama. I appreciate that Duncan’s story is important for him, but it’s not important for the overall book. It adds nothing more for other characters.
However, Duncan marrying Jocasta is important for later. He does have to make some financial decisions to protect her. That doesn’t mean the whole secret storyline is essential, though.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
I didn’t mind that Duncan’s story was skipped over in Outlander Season 5, or in the earlier seasons either. I loved seeing Murtagh and Jocasta’s story, especially with Murtagh as the leader of the Regulators. His inclusion really helped me connect more to the Regulator’s storyline. Sacrificing Duncan’s story was worth it.
Again, I just didn’t find Duncan’s story all that important for the overall story. In a TV show, the storylines chosen need to have a reason to be there. It could be for some character development or it could be due to a knock-on effect with another storyline.
The show, instead, opted for the ring storyline with an argument between Claire and Jamie. And these sorts of arguments are important. We need to see that the two aren’t always happy with each other and that they do have arguments, but that they also work through their arguments. After all, no couple is happy 100% of the time. There are always disagreements but it’s how they handle the disagreements that counts.
