Jamie shares Duncan’s secret with Claire in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 40

Duncan Innes had a secret to share, and now it’s time to find out what that secret is. Jamie shared it with Claire in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 40.

The chapter initially starts off with just Claire going about the day at the wedding. There is a priest, and the wedding is going to happen. However, there are a few things going on around Claire. It’s only toward the end of the chapter that we finally get Duncan’s secret.

Considering the time period, there were minimal reasons Duncan would have been worried about the wedding night. However, it was something embarrassing for Duncan. Even now, it’s something embarrassing for a man.

The chapter wasn’t used in the TV series. We didn’t get much time at Jocasta’s wedding, and rather than involving Duncan more, the focus was put on other characters. I’ll get to why I didn’t mind that considering the circumstances around Duncan’s inclusion in the show in the adaptation section.

As for foreshadowing, it doesn’t offer too much for Claire and Jamie. It’s just more drama to add into the wedding. We can’t possibly have a “normal” wedding.
