Every now and then, the topic of fanfiction comes up. What does Diana Gabaldon think of those who create Outlander fanfiction?

Fanfiction is something that no author can really escape from. Fans of various TV shows put words to a page (or a computer). There are many thoughts and debates about whether fanfiction is legal or not, and there was once a time that Amazon allowed writers to publish fanfiction within certain book franchises.

Diana Gabaldon is very clear about her stance on fanfiction. In short, she doesn’t like it. She finds it immoral and illegal.

One thing she’s clear about is that she doesn’t want fans to send her fanfiction at all. Fanart and creators like that are different, but when it comes to writing stories with her characters, she’s not a fan.

Why doesn’t Diana Gabaldon like fanfiction?

If other types of fan content is fine, why doesn’t Diana Gabaldon like fanfiction? For the most part, these are her characters. And her characters aren’t like her children. They are an extension of her, and she views tampering with the characters as tampering with parts of her directly.

On top of that, there are legal issues involved. There are many stories of writers being sued by fans because storylines have come up that they’d gained from fanfiction accidentally. You’ll find that the majority of writers ask not to be sent fanfiction, and they will refuse to read that fanfiction.

Gabaldon specifically states that she doesn’t want people writing fanfiction at all. She would like people to respect that, but there are stories out there published on the web.

She is not alone when it comes to thoughts on fanfiction. Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin also doesn’t like fanfiction. Interview with a Vampire author Anne Rice’s lawyers even went as far as threatening to sue fanfiction websites until they took down their fanfiction content.
