Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 39 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There is a little foreshadowing within the chapter about Wylie. This is for the chapters to come. After all, there’s no way Wylie has been introduced just for the sake of it.
Jamie comments about the horses during the chapter. It’s clear that things involving the horses, Claire, and Wylie are all going to come up again.
Then there’s the Bonnet storyline. We now learn that Bonnet has powerful friends and allies, and this is something for Jamie to consider carefully. He’s going to have to play things a little differently knowing about the connections to the powerful people as it could affect a lot for him. MacDonald brings up the land and Tryon, making suggestions that there could be options available.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
This chapter wasn’t used all that much in Outlander Season 5. Herman Husband isn’t a big part of the TV story because Murtagh takes that role. MacDonald wasn’t introduced because Lord John Grey could be used to pass on messages instead. For a TV show, it makes sense to keep characters we’ve already come to know instead of finding new actors for new characters.
The main part of the chapter kept was the use of Wylie. After all, he does come up again in the near future and it is an important part of the wedding story. Well, it’s the drama for the chapter for Claire and Jamie.
We do get to know a little more of what Bonnet is up to. The show does it differently, though. We get to see it for ourselves and not just hear it in the story. As I’ve mentioned in the past, a TV show needs to show things a lot more than tell. To be honest, a book needs to show things more than tell us things too, and it is a flaw I have with first-person POV books.
