Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 39 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
The chapter starts at Jocasta’s wedding to Duncan Innes. They’ve married now, and Duncan has gone off somewhere. Claire has no idea where he is, but Jamie decides to go looking for him.
While Claire is on her own, she ends up seeing Farquard Campbell, who has a new redcoat with him. Donald MacDonald is looking for Jamie but certainly pays some attention to the way Claire dresses. They are both eyeing each other up in terms of stature and money.
There is a fight that breaks out at the wedding. We don’t really get to know too much about the fight, but it involves something to do with the Regulators. Herman Husband tells Claire that the Regulators are gathering. That part of the storyline isn’t over yet.
Claire manages to get away from everyone, only to end up with Philip Wylie coming upon her. He’s his “charming” self, annoying as ever, and he explains that he brought some horses with him. Jocasta wanted to buy one and she said that others would too. The female horses are pregnant, so Wylie has also brought the male to show off the breeding partner.
Eventually, Jamie finds Claire again. They still have no idea where Duncan is.
Before they can find out, MacDonald comes back and gets a chance to talk to Jamie. He has information about Bonnet, and it’s not good information. Bonnet has connections in high places, and that’s going to make it harder to kill him.
In the end, Duncan comes across Jamie. He wants to speak to Jamie about the wedding night, and it’s clear that Duncan is nervous about what to expect. It’s time for Jamie to find out exactly why.
