Roger reads some of Brianna’s sort-of diary in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 38

During The Gathering, Roger agreed to perform at a wedding. That’s where he returns from in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 38.

This is a chance to see what Roger does while on the Ridge. At least, a little of what he does. We’ve not really had a chance to find this out during the other chapters. We know that Jamie tends to things around the Ridge, and we can figure out the types of things Claire and Brianna will do. However, we always hear about how Roger isn’t set for the 18th century, but the books haven’t really gone into what he does yet.

This chapter doesn’t delve into that too much. We just get a sense of things that he likes to do when he gets a chance.

However, the chapter moves on from that. He picks up one of Brianna’s sketchbooks that actually turns out to be a sort of diary. It’s a place where she writes about her dreams, and there are some important bits to come out of those dreams.

The chapter wasn’t used for the series, which isn’t all that surprising. There were other ways to show what Roger did at the Ridge, and we didn’t really need to delve that much into Bree’s dreams. This chapter was a lot of telling rather than showing, and TV shows don’t work that way.

Let’s dive into The Fiery Cross Chapter 38.
