Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
The chapter certainly foreshadows a couple of things to come. The first is Lizzy’s feelings for the boys. Eventually, Lizzy falls for both Beardsley twins. In fact, she ends up having a relationship with both twins. It’s a fun little story revolving around the characters, and this chapter certainly helps to foreshadow some of what’s to come.
The second piece of foreshadowing is in the penicillin storyline. Claire wants to make the Ridge as safe as possible, and arguably, this is just the start of it. There’s still more to come as she looks for a way to help keep people safe and happy.
However, that’s not going to work for everyone. There will be people who turn against her for it, and there are people who view her as a witch. Get ready for plenty of drama, although mostly in A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter
Outlander Book 5, Chapter 36 was used in the TV series. Claire didn’t make her penicillin alone in the series, though. She had Marsali by her side, who became her apprentice in the series. If I’m honest, I really love the way the series used Marsali, creating her into a much stronger character. I wish more was done with Fergus, but getting Marsali was something.
It makes sense in a TV show to adapt some of the characters more than the books offer. After all, the show will want to make use of the actors they have, and in a TV series, there is more call for seeing some of the side characters more and getting to know them. We just have to look at the complaints about the way Brianna isn’t used to see that.
The surgery happened as the book offered. There was a discussion about a penicillin allergy which the book didn’t go into, with the show using a part of Voyager to help tell that story. It was a great way to remind us that not everyone can have penicillin, and something in Claire’s life stood out, showing her caring nature. She can get attached to her patients.
