Claire and Mrs. Bug talk about medicine and charm in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 34

Back at Fraser’s Ridge, it’s time to get to know a little more about Mrs. Bug in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 34. We also get another sign of Claire making penicillin.

The chapter is mostly between the two women. While Adso and Jemmy do get mentions, it’s mostly about getting to know a little more about Mrs. Bug.

She wants some of the broth that is being cooked. That’s understandable considering how food is necessary and Mrs. Bug is the one that does all the cooking. However, Claire needs it for her own uses. She wants things to go moldy, and it’s clear to us that she’s trying to make penicillin.

However, the conversation moves onto Mrs. Bug’s past. She talks about a man she once knew who was a charmer as well as a medicine man. People would always go to him for spells and potions, and that brings up memories for Claire. After all, the time at the witch trials would lessen with time, but there would always be triggers to bring up the memories.

The chapter wasn’t used for the TV series. That’s not all too surprising due to time, and honestly, I didn’t miss it all too much. I’ll share why when we get into the adaptation section.

But what about foreshadowing? It’s all about the mold.

Let’s dive into The Fiery Cross Chapter 34.
