Outlander Season 7 has gained four extra episodes, taking the episode count to 16. Will the season air in two parts of eight episodes each?

With the news that Outlander Season 6 would lose four episodes due to filming problems during the pandemic, we did learn the four episodes would be added to Season 7’s episode count. We’re still getting 24 episodes across the two seasons, but there’s not going to be an equal amount of episodes in each season.

Outlander Season 7 is now going to match the length of Outlander Season 1. Could the season also get a similar release schedule?

The first season was split into two parts, with eight episodes airing in 2014 and then the other eight episodes airing in 2015. Could we see something similar happen with Season 7? There are a few factors to consider here.

Outlander Season 7 wasn’t written as two parts

When the first season was written, the release plan would have been discussed. The season was written as two halves. It worked by having a major cliffhanger at the end of Episode 8.

This isn’t the way Outlander Season 7 has been written. It was originally done as a 12-episode season. The four episodes added on are likely going to be the four episodes from Season 6 that haven’t been filmed.

Of course, there is a chance that the writers could go back to the drawing board, but it doesn’t make all that much sense for that to happen. So, it means that Episode 8 isn’t going to be written as a midseason point. It’s going to be Episode 4 of the original Season 7.

There may be no need to air in two halves

The whole reason to stop filming now and push the episodes into Outlander Season 7 was due to the length of time it was taking to film during the pandemic. Doing 12 episodes threatened the release date.

There may not be that problem when it comes to filming Season 7. It looks like the plan is to start filming in 2022. 16 episodes would likely take the year, but there’s a good chance that we could see the season premiere by mid-2023 if filming can go to plan.

Of course, doing eight episodes in say early 2023 and then another eight episodes at the end of 2023 could realistically work, but only if there’s a need for it and there’s a natural stopping point at the halfway mark.
