The episode counts for Outlander Season 6 and 7 have changed. Just how many episodes will we now get in Outlander Season 7, and why?
On World Outlander Day, we got the exciting news that filming had finished. Outlander Season 6 is now in the post-production stage, and we’ll get it in early 2022.
However, there was a little bit of bad news. The whole reason filming has finished so quickly (remember it didn’t start until January 2021) is that the episode order has been reduced. Instead of 12 episodes, we’ll now get just eight episodes. It’s the shortest season to date.
For those worried about how the show will fit everything from A Breath of Snow and Ashes in, it’s time to take a step back and look at some good news. The four missing episodes won’t just be forgotten. They’re being moved to Outlander Season 7.
Outlander Season 7 is extended by four episodes
Originally, Outlander Season 7 was going to have 12 episodes. Now, the season will get 16 episodes, matching the length of the very first season of the series.
It’s highly likely that some of the end of A Breath of Snow and Ashes will be used for the first four episodes of the season. The episodes would have already been written for Season 6, so it makes sense to pick straight back up with them for the new season. After that, the season can move onto An Echo in the Bone.
Why have the episode counts changed?
We can blame the pandemic for the change to the episode counts. Outlander Season 6 filming was pushed back considerably, and it’s taking longer than normal to do each block of episodes. To get all 12 in, the release date of the season would need to be pushed back from early 2022, and nobody wants that!
The plan is to return to filming next year when things are better. This should mean getting right on track and keeping the delays to a minimum. Outlander Season 7 should still arrive in 2023 as we’ve originally predicted.
