Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

The foreshadowing here certainly connects to Bree and Roger and their family together. Brianna worries about things that could happen to Jemmy because he’s not immunized against things. She fears of the things that could happen because of the lack of 20th-century medicine.

Roger and Bree do eventually have a second child, Amanda. She does have a health problem that will require 20th-century medicine, and so they have to head back through the stones to help her. Brianna’s worries are legitimate, and they do foreshadow this to come.

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

This chapter was partly used for Outlander Season 5. Not all of it was shown through Brianna and Roger’s conversations, although we did get some of the shooting practice. It’s a great bonding moment for the couple after the lack of bonding they got during the fourth season.

Since Brianna’s thoughts about illnesses and injuries are internalized, they had to be shown on screen in some way. Rather than have the conversation between Bree and Roger, the conversation was between Claire and Roger.

In a way, the change made sense and I didn’t mind it all that much. Claire and Roger both wanted Bree and Jemmy to be in the 20th century where it was safer for them. Roger wanted to be back in the 20th century since he never intended to remain in the past but has chosen that for Brianna. This moment would be a driving force throughout the fifth season.

The show also adapting the shooting lessons slightly. We needed to see Roger worry about not being able to shoot rather than it being internalized like it can be in the book. He wants it to be about his eyesight, but he just has to admit that he’s not a good shot. We see him worry about not being able to fit in the 18th century, living up to expectations Jamie has of him.
