Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 18 breakdown

Adso is introduced during Outlander Book 5, Chapter 18

If there’s one thing the show changed, it was Adso’s introduction. We get to meet him during Outlander Book 5, Chapter 18, and we certainly get a hint at his personality.

The start of the chapter is told from Jamie’s point of view. He breaks away from the group as they all head back to Fraser’s Ridge from the Gathering. Eventually, we do move to Claire’s point of view as she gets to meet Adso for the first time.

Not only did we get Adso’s introduction, but there was an important discussion about the medicine in the future. Jamie learns that women have more control over when and if they have children, which concerns him a little. I love seeing these different views considering the different time periods.

It’s a relatively long chapter, and the majority of it was cut from the series. Adso’s introduction wasn’t the only thing changed. The show didn’t include the discussion of hysterectomies and contraception. I’ll be honest and say that I wasn’t all too surprised that a lot of this chapter was skipped over since the Gathering wasn’t included.

I do think there’s a little bit of foreshadowing in this chapter. However, that foreshadowing isn’t for anything in The Fiery Cross. It’s getting us ready for something that’s coming up on A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
