Outlander Book Club: The Fiery Cross Chapter 17 breakdown

We get a chapter that is all about Jamie’s thoughts in Outlander Book 5, Chapter 17

We’re onto the last chapter of Part One in Outlander Book 5. It’s a relatively short chapter, but the first (I don’t think I’ve forgotten one!) from Jamie’s point of view in this book.

The chapter is mostly internalized. We get this look inside Jamie’s mind as he works through his thoughts. He just wants to enjoy this last night at the Gathering, but that’s not all too easy. After all, there’s a summons on his mind.

It would have been very hard to develop this chapter for the TV show just as it was. And that’s without the problem of not having the Gathering at all. However, the show did manage some of this through a conversation with another character. It also led to an amazing moment that had fans excited. I’ll discuss all this in the adaptation section.

While the chapter is internalized, there is a little foreshadowing of things to come. Jamie mentions Culloden, and it’s clear what we’re getting ready for even if we didn’t know the history of the Colonies.
