Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There is a little bit of foreshadowing in the story about Hillsborough. This fight with the Regulators is only going to get worse. There are going to be more who revolt against the taxes they need to pay. It’s not that they have to pay taxes, but that they have to pay in coin and the amount that they need to pay.

I think we also get a little foreshadowing of trouble at the Ridge. Jamie has put out a call to anyone who was at Ardsmuir, even if he didn’t get along with everyone there. It doesn’t matter. They all served time together for the same cause. Get ready for the Christies.

There is also a tiny bit of foreshadowing in Claire thinking about the young doctor. She’s going to continue trying to bring modern-day medicine to the time period, and that will include some information for the people of the Ridge. However, she’s not going to be able to do it under her own name!

Adapting The Fiery Cross chapter

While the Gathering wasn’t used in Outlander Season 5, we actually got some of the Regulators storyline in Season 4. As Jamie looked for men to come and live at Fraser’s Ridge, he learned about the struggle with taxes and the high rates. He found out why people were so disenfranchised in the colonies.

It was easy to overlook this inclusion, believing that it was just to find a way to give Murtagh a storyline. However, it was also a way to include some of the Gathering, making it clear that the writers never intended to start Outlander Season 5 with the full Gathering storyline.

This worked for me. Granted, I was really glad that Murtagh got to be part of this storyline. I felt a lot more connected to the Regulators storyline because of Murtagh. I’ll admit that I never even considered how The Fiery Cross was used in Outlander Season 4 until this read-through.

The rest of the story wasn’t used. We didn’t get anything involving Archie Hayes or the regiment that was leaving the colonies. There just wasn’t the time for it, and we didn’t really need it for the overall story.
