Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

There isn’t too much in the way of foreshadowing in this chapter. It’s more about setting the stage for the first part of The Fiery Cross. However, there is a little.

It’s all about Roger and Brianna. We get this confirmation that the two are working on being together. Their time hasn’t run out yet, but Roger is working on proving that he is there for love and not just obligation.

The mention of the priest is where the foreshadowing comes in. The Gathering isn’t just going to have a baptism and one wedding (well, okay it does but that isn’t the initial intention). It will have their wedding, too. In fact, it will have a baptism and only their wedding.

Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter

This chapter wasn’t used. Duncan Innes isn’t part of Outlander Seasons 3 or 4, so we don’t get this moment of him asking Jamie for permission to marry Jocasta. While it is a shame that we didn’t get Duncan, I did love the way Murtagh was used.

There was always the thought of most fans that Murtagh would end up replacing Duncan. That was never the case, and I never thought it would be. You see, I always wondered how Murtagh and Jocasta could make things work when he was leading the Regulators.

And that’s what I loved so much about the adaptation. We got to see this love in older age, which is something not often shown on screen. Plus, we got to see Jocasta make a decision that she felt she needed to. Despite her love for Murtagh, she couldn’t be on his side when it came to the Battle of Alamance. After everything she lost because of Culloden, she couldn’t do that again.

Getting that sort of development on the TV series was important for me. Because of what came from that storyline, I didn’t miss not getting to know Duncan and only seeing him briefly at the end of Outlander Season 5.
