Outlander Book Club: Drums of Autumn Chapter 67 breakdown
Just the Outlander chapter
Roger is recovering from the injury to his foot. Claire comes up to the surgery, where Roger has been sleeping, to check on him and finds that it’s all cleared.
The conversation moves onto the baby, and how the baby isn’t sleeping much. It’s impossible to hear the cries up at the house, and Claire shares that the bedroom will soon have a roof meaning the two of them can move into the house.
Could Roger move to the cabin with Brianna and the baby? Roger brings up the fact that Brianna flinches when he touches her. Both of Bree’s experiences with lovemaking are painful, because losing your virginity is painful no matter how careful the man is. Roger just needs to give Brianna time.
Later on, Jamie shares that he and Claire are heading to Fergus and Marsali’s house for a few days. They’re taking Lizzie with them, which means Brianna and the baby are alone in the cabin. This is a chance for Roger to make amends.
Jamie makes it clear that he’ll never like Roger because of what it meant for Ian. However, he also acknowledges that he may have taken a lot more from Roger. Both men agree that they are even, although Jamie can’t leave without telling Roger he better not be a coward when it comes to Bree.
Roger isn’t. During the night, he decides to go down to the cabin, but it’s been locked. Roger walks around the outside for a while with the intention of going back to the house. However, Brianna leaves the cabin to get to the toilet. After that, they both talk, making it clear that Roger staying for both love and obligation are likely linked together, and he may be staying for both.
When the baby wakes for food, the two go into the cabin. Roger strips to make Bree comfortable breastfeeding in front of him. He just watches and tries to reconnect with Brianna.
In the end, Roger gets to hold the baby and talk with Brianna. He wants to know why Bree stayed when she had the chance to leave him behind. Love? Obligation? Maybe both. Maybe neither.
The two are working their way back to each other.
