Outlander Book Club: Drums of Autumn Chapter 58 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There isn’t much foreshadowing in this chapter. I guess, John saying that he’ll stay at River Run for the night is a hint that something is coming. We know that Brianna catches him up to something and she decides to blackmail him.
Bree doesn’t spend a lot of time focusing on Forbes, but it’s clear he would be hurt by Brianna’s way to avoid picking a gem. After all, he takes the gems away without a word. Get ready for Forbes to be continually hurt and want to get some sort of revenge. Men can be fragile things.
Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter
This chapter had to be used in Outlander Season 4. There was no way around these details because they have a knock-on effect in storylines.
For Brianna and Lord John, it starts their future friendship. We get these two people who can be their true selves around each other in the future—although there’s still some to come in Drums of Autumn to allow that to happen.
Then there’s Forbes. We know that more is to come with his storyline. The TV series did change Forbes’s storyline slightly, but there was still a similar theme. Forbes is embarrassed by Brianna turning him down.
The chapter is also important for Brianna’s development. We see that she can be perceptive about other people, realizing the trap Forbes was setting for her. At the same time, we see her fear that Roger isn’t coming back. She loves him, but she only wants him in her life if he wants to be, and she’s scared that he won’t choose her and the baby.
Seeing that vulnerability in a character is important. There’s a strength in vulnerability.
