Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

The first bit of foreshadowing in this chapter is what will happen when Roger returns. Jocasta has made it clear that she doesn’t trust him. That’s because she doesn’t know him. Would he make a good manager of a plantation?

When Roger does finally get back to Brianna, there are all sorts of comments about him. Some people view him as a gold digger considering that Brianna is going to inherit River Run. I think this chapter helps to foreshadow this, along with Jocasta goading Roger into making it clear he loves Brianna.

The next bit of foreshadowing comes from Ulysses’s story when he tells Brianna about his father’s death. The man was bitten by a snake, which feels like some foreshadowing of what will happen to Jamie. It’s clear there are venomous snakes in the area and everyone should keep a look out.

Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter

Not much of this chapter was developed for Outlander Season 4. It wasn’t until Season 5 that we found out Ulysses’s story, and even that was cut short and because he had to go on the run.

Jocasta does want to set up Brianna with a good marriage. Considering the time period, this isn’t all that surprising. Jocasta doesn’t know that Bree is from the 1970s and wouldn’t be able to contemplate the idea of women not being the property of husbands and fathers. Jocasta simply thinks she is doing a good thing for her great-niece.

It’s later sections of Drums of Autumn that are used for this bigger part of the storyline throughout Outlander Season 4, Episode 11 and into Episode 12.

I don’t really blame the show for cutting out this chapter, including Ulysses’s story. There’s no point adding something in that isn’t all that necessary for a TV show. Ulysses’s story was arguably only needed at the very end.
