Outlander Book Club: Drums of Autumn Chapter 52 breakdown
Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
There is a lot that develops the story in this chapter, but there are two moments for foreshadowing. The first is the mention of Frank, more specifically the way Brianna says “my father.” It’s going to affect Jamie.
He knows that it’s wrong to feel jealous of a dead man. Frank did a good thing by taking Claire back while pregnant and raising Brianna as his own. However, that doesn’t stop Jamie from resenting a few things.
The second is in the comment about not returning if he can’t bring Roger back. It’s not going to be easy to get Roger back from where he’s been sold and passed on to. Someone is going to have to make a sacrifice, and Jamie intends for it to be him.
Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter
Some of the chapter was partly used, but it was lumped into the big reveal scene. We watched it all play out in chronological order, rather than have Brianna think back. This worked best for the TV show, especially with how little time there was to adapt some of the last parts of this book.
We did get to see Brianna arrive at River Run, but it was under some different circumstances. Everyone said their goodbyes to Brianna at the Ridge and Murtagh took Bree to River Run. This would help to set up the storyline of Murtagh and Jocasta, while also allowing the time to be spent on Jocasta getting to know her great-niece.
Personally, I loved Murtagh’s inclusion throughout Outlander Seasons 4 and 5, so I have no complaints about how the chapter was adapted. It didn’t lose too much, especially when it came to the important parts of the story.
