Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter

I do feel like this chapter foreshadows what’s to come for Brianna as she deals with surviving. She wants to kill Bonnet and says that shooting is too good for him. Jamie thinks about forgiveness. It takes until A Breath of Snow and Ashes, but we do see Brianna getting the chance to kill Bonnet and it is a shot to the head.

The question is whether it’s mercy or revenge. A bit of both, maybe? Brianna’s chance to forgive and move forward? I can’t remember how it plays out with Brianna sharing which one it was. I like the way the show did it with just that look aimed at Roger making it clear that she wasn’t going to give an answer because only she gets to know.

There is also some foreshadowing in Jamie’s thoughts about taking care of Brianna’s attacker. That’s certainly going to come up!

Adapting the Drums of Autumn chapter

Most of this chapter played out the way it did in the book, except for the very end. The biggest difference is that Brianna isn’t terrified of dying in childbirth in the series. I do think that was to set up the fact that the writers knew they wouldn’t have Claire and Jamie at the birth.

In the novel, Brianna fears death during childbirth. It’s Jamie’s presence that helps her fight to stay alive. Since we don’t have Bree’s fears at this point in the story, there’s no need for that moment at the end of the story. Book readers didn’t like the change, but it’s clear that the writers were getting ready for that change early on.

The most important parts were kept. Bree told Jamie that she knew about Wentworth and Jamie proved to Bree that she couldn’t have fought Bonnet off. It gives Bree the chance to move forward in her life, focusing on her baby and the eventual hope that Roger will come back to her.
