Outlander Book Club: Drums of Autumn Chapter 40 breakdown
Roger finds Brianna in Outlander Book 4, Chapter 40
After traveling across the seas, Roger finally finds Brianna. And it’s really only by chance in Outlander Book 4, Chapter 40.
This is one of those chapters that does involve some “well, that’s convenient” things. We do get to know why Brianna and Lizzie took longer than initially expected to get to North Carolina, but it’s still convenient that Roger gets to the same part of the colony at the same time.
Also convenient is the fact that Jamie Fraser is in a similar part of the colony. Again, it all just falls into place, and it’s a part of all fiction that as readers we just have to accept.
For the most part, the show kept this chapter the same. There were a few changes, such as how the argument between Brianna and Roger started after their handfasting and when a certain rape takes place. But it doesn’t change too much. The important things are that Bree and Roger find each other, they’re handfasted, and they sleep together.
Oh, and of course, Lizzie jumps to conclusions. I’ll get to that in the chapter breakdown.
Foreshadowing? Oh yes, it all comes from Lizzie jumping to conclusions about Roger and Brianna. There is also an element of the chapter pushing the plot forward.
This is the longest chapter of the rest of Drums of Autumn at about an hour and 40 minutes on Audible. After this, the chapters are less than an hour long. And we are now a good way over the halfway mark.
Let’s dive into Drums of Autumn Chapter 40.
