Outlander Book Club: Drums of Autumn Chapter 39 breakdown
Roger has to hope that Lady Luck is on his side in Outlander Book 4, Chapter 39
Everything comes to a head on the Gloriana in Outlander Book 4, Chapter 39. Roger has to hope that luck is on his side if he wants to keep his life.
The story involving the smallpox and meeting Morag all built up to this point. Of course Roger was going to get caught. Of course he was going to see the dark side to Stephen Bonnet’s character. We end Part Eight with Roger facing potential death if a coin didn’t land the right way.
We also learn a little more about Bonnet. He hasn’t always been the pirate that he is. This is a man who is a product of his upbringing, and we get to experience that through his story.
There was no way that any of this story could be skipped over. The placement of it changes slightly, but nothing that changes the outcome of the part of the Outlander story. And it all helps to build up to Roger’s feelings of Bonnet at the very end of this book. So, the TV series had to include it.
It does offer a bit of foreshadowing when it comes to Roger’s feelings for Bonnet. However, most of the chapter is in the moment. It’s all about bringing an end to Roger’s time on the Gloriana.
And so, let us bring an end to Drums of Autumn Part Eight with Chapter 39.
